Kyle Busch, the NASCAR star renowned for his unmatched record in the sport’s top three racing series, passed away due to severe pneumonia that developed into sepsis. The Busch family released a statement on Saturday confirming the medical evaluation: ‘Severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, leading to rapid and overwhelming associated complications.’
Busch had collapsed a day before at a General Motors driving simulator facility in Concord, North Carolina. Sepsis, a life-threatening condition, arises from the body’s acute response to infections, leading to potential damage to tissues and organs, as described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Busch family’s statement follows an earlier message posted on social media, which mentioned his severe illness and hospitalization. It was announced that he would not participate in the Coca-Cola 600, one of NASCAR’s prominent races of the season.

Busch, aged 41, reported symptoms such as shortness of breath, overheating, and blood coughing the previous day, according to a 911 call obtained by CBS News. During this emergency call, a caller described Busch’s distress calmly, noting, ‘He’s experiencing shortness of breath, feels overheated, believes he might faint, and has been coughing up blood.’
The caller further informed the dispatcher that Busch was awake, lying on the bathroom floor inside the complex, with details provided by the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. Notably, Busch had requested medical assistance following a cup race at Watkins Glen, citing a sinus cold.
Despite these challenges, Busch triumphed in the Craftsman Truck Series race on May 15 at Dover Motor Speedway, mere days before his untimely demise. His career accomplishments include winning Cup Series titles in 2015 and 2019, while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. Busch remains the all-time leader in victories in both the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (102) and Craftsman Truck Series (69). With 63 wins in the Cup Series, he holds a record 234 wins across NASCAR’s premier divisions.
