National Jubilee of Prayer Blends Faith and Politics

2 weeks ago 0

A large gathering took place on the National Mall on Sunday, marked by Christian prayer and political enthusiasm. Promoted by President Trump, this event aimed to ‘rededicate America as one nation under God.’

Thousands assembled in Washington to listen to spiritual and political leaders, including members of Trump’s cabinet. Notably, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth delivered a recorded video message urging attendees to ‘pray without ceasing,’ a biblical phrase from the New Testament.

“Let us pray for our nation on bended knee,” he encouraged, referencing an account of President George Washington praying at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778, a narrative cherished by some Christians advocating for America’s Christian roots.

The event featured speeches and Christian music, set against the emblematic backdrop of American government. It sought to promote the idea that the nation’s founding was a Christian endeavor, a perspective challenged by numerous scholars. The principle of separation of church and state remains a cornerstone of American democracy, as underscored by the First Amendment, which prohibits any law establishing a religion or hindering its free exercise.

Although some participants hoped for Trump’s physical presence, he participated through a prerecorded video. In the video, he read from the Old Testament book of II Chronicles. This passage, previously filmed in the Oval Office, is popular among his Christian followers, interpreted as an appeal for national repentance and blessing.
