New York Knicks Edge Closer to NBA Championship with Stunning Comeback

2 days ago 0

New York Knicks players Mitchell Robinson and Josh Hart celebrated after a dramatic Game 4 victory in the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday in New York. The Knicks, who made a historic comeback from being 29 points down, now stand on the brink of their first championship since 1973 with a 107-106 win. OG Anunoby completed the rally by tipping in the missed long-range attempt by Jalen Brunson with only 1.2 seconds left. This triumph gives the Knicks a 3-1 lead in the series and three opportunities to secure the title.

Things seemed bleak for New York early on, with the Spurs dominating to a 27-point halftime lead. Yet, Jalen Brunson’s remarkable performance of 36 points alongside Anunoby’s effort of 33 points spurred the comeback. As Brunson’s shot bounced softly off the rim, Anunoby reached high to tip it in. Knicks coach Mike Brown highlighted the pivotal moment, emphasizing the importance of Anunoby’s presence on the offensive glass.

“I told OG as big, as strong, as athletic as he is, he’s got to be a monster on the offensive glass tonight,” Coach Mike Brown remarked.

The record-breaking win marks the largest comeback in a finals game since Boston overcame a 24-point deficit against the Lakers in 2008. The Knicks, trailing by 81-52 in the third quarter, managed to rally against a young Spurs squad that started with an impressive shooting performance but cooled off significantly in the latter half.

Despite the Spurs’ strong start, where they sank 11 of their first 16 three-point shots, their efficiency plummeted as they converted only 3 out of 17 in the second half. Knicks fans, delighting in their team’s resilience, sang along to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” at Madison Square Garden, celebrating an almost unimaginable comeback.

Spurs player Victor Wembanyama scored 24 points and gathered 13 rebounds but struggled with accuracy, making just 9 out of 25 field goals. The first three finals games were won by road teams, a rare occurrence only previously seen once. The Spurs looked poised to continue the streak until New York’s surging performance turned the tide.

While President Donald Trump did not attend the game, Taylor Swift was present amidst similar security measures as Game 3. These security protocols had previously irked the Knicks, prompting them to cancel an outdoor watch party planned around Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks, having experienced a setback in Game 3 with the end of their 13-game winning streak, faced another daunting challenge against the Spurs in Game 4. Despite their struggles, New York managed to curtail the Spurs’ shooting to 4-for-20 in the third, initiating a 13-0 run that cut the deficit to 90-75 entering the fourth quarter.

Even when Stephon Castle put San Antonio briefly back in the lead with two critical free throws with just under half a minute to go, the Knicks continued to fight. New York showed resilience similar to their earlier playoff victory over Cleveland, overcoming significant adversaries each time.

Following their setback, the Spurs, led by consistent contributors Dylan Harper, De’Aaron Fox, and Devin Vassell, aim to regroup for Game 5. Each of them scored in double digits, with Harper leading at 21 points. Meanwhile, Knicks fans witnessed a memorable watch party in Central Park, mirroring the intensity of the game itself.

Wembanyama, who faced booing during his warmup, was involved in several physical exchanges with Knicks players. Mitchell Robinson received a flagrant foul for hitting him above the shoulders, while Jose Alvarado underwent review for a comparable offense. Ultimately, Wembanyama remained solid against New York’s defense despite later regretting two missed free throws as the game drew to a close.

The Spurs’ initial momentum gave them a significant lead, opening with a 12-2 run and securing a 41-22 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Their lead grew to 57-32 following Julian Champagnie’s successful three-point play.

As Game 5 approaches, anticipation builds for a potentially decisive match in San Antonio on Saturday night.
