NHL Mourns the Loss of Stanley Cup Champion Claude Lemieux

The sports community is remembering Claude Lemieux, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 60. Just days before his death, Lemieux participated in a ceremonial event at the Montreal Canadiens’ home arena. Dressed in the red and blue of the Canadiens, he proudly carried a flame across a darkened rink before Game 3 against the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final.

Tributes quickly emerged as the news of Lemieux’s passing spread. His daughter, Claudia Lemieux, reposted a tribute from the New Jersey Devils on Instagram and shared her own message: “No words to express the level of devastation we feel. I love you forever daddy. Forever your only girl.”

Claude Lemieux’s son, Brendan, also paid tribute by sharing a family photo on social media. He wrote, “I love you dad! My son’s favorite person is going to watch from above for a while. We will see you.” Brendan, following in his father’s footsteps, played in the NHL for a decade and most recently with Carolina during the 2023-24 season.

Lemieux will be remembered for one of the most iconic goals in Canadiens history in 1986, when he scored a decisive backhander in Game 7 of the second round against Hartford. His personality on the ice was distinctive; he was a player who managed to both challenge opponents and earn the respect of his teammates. Former Canadiens center Doug Gilmour described him as difficult to play against, yet invaluable to have on your team.

Born in Mont-Laurier, Quebec, Lemieux’s loss is felt deeply across the sports world, especially among those who admired his skill and tenacity on the ice.
