Pete Alonso’s Misstep Against the Detroit Tigers

Pete Alonso, the Baltimore Orioles first baseman, encountered a challenging moment during a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. In the top of the fourth inning, Detroit’s Dillon Dingler hit a straightforward fly ball aimed at Alonso. With a runner on first, Alonso chose not to catch the ball directly but rather let it drop. This decision backfired as Alonso misjudged the bounce and then fumbled a throw to second base. Both runners managed to advance safely, and the play resulted in an error for Alonso.

Alonso’s strategy aimed at a double play might have been praised if successful. Such risky decisions carry potential rewards and pitfalls. Unfortunately, this time Alonso fell short, leading to two runs for Detroit in the inning. Nevertheless, the Orioles rallied to secure a 5-3 victory, ending their three-game losing streak.

The game was otherwise disappointing for Alonso, marked by an error and a difficult day at the plate, going 0-for-4. Despite some strong performances early in the season with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs, his batting average stands at .224, indicating an inconsistent year.

Earlier this year, Alonso signed a significant five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles, providing him an annual salary of $31 million.
