Possible Cryptocurrency Crime in Savannah Guthrie’s Mother’s Disappearance

1 week ago 0

Disappearance Linked to Possible Cryptocurrency Crime

The disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, near Tucson, Arizona, may be linked to a cryptocurrency-related crime known as a “wrench attack,” according to former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer. Guthrie disappeared in the early hours of February 1, and it’s believed she was taken against her will. Investigators have not identified a suspect or made any arrests but suspect a motive behind the incident.

Connection to Scottsdale Home Invasion

Coffindaffer suggested a connection between Guthrie’s case and a home invasion in Scottsdale, Arizona, occurring the day before Guthrie’s disappearance, linked to a plot involving cryptocurrency theft. The term “wrench attack” describes situations where victims are threatened or abducted for their cryptocurrency assets. Coffindaffer emphasized this possibility, highlighting its relevance to Guthrie’s case.

Understanding ‘Wrench Attacks’

Crypto tracing firm TRM Labs defines “wrench attacks” as scenarios involving physical force or intimidation to gain access to a victim’s cryptocurrency holdings. Named due to imagined assault using a wrench to coerce victims into revealing crypto keys, these attacks have been increasing worldwide. In the first four months of 2026, security firm CertiK recorded 34 verified incidents globally, marking a 41 percent rise from the same period in the previous year. Estimated losses during this period amounted to approximately $101 million.

The potential year-end total is projected at 130 incidents with losses reaching several hundred million dollars. Notably, in France, kidnappings involving wealthy cryptocurrency holders resulted in severe ransom incidents, including the case of French crypto-wallet firm Ledger’s co-founder David Balland and his wife.

Reasons for Rising ‘Wrench Attacks’

TRM Labs cites anonymity in cryptocurrency transactions, public displays of crypto wealth, and ease of personal data collection online as reasons for the rise in such attacks. Any public flaunting of cryptocurrency attracts attention from potential attackers.

Details of Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood of Tucson on January 31, reported missing the following day. Authorities found her blood on the front porch, indicating a struggle. Her disappearance has instigated a large-scale search involving local and federal agencies. Surveillance footage from a doorbell camera captured a masked man, identified as a suspect, at Guthrie’s front door. No suspect has been identified or major breakthroughs announced in the ongoing investigation.
