President Donald Trump has expressed doubts about the election outcomes in California, particularly regarding the pace of counting mail ballots. Despite no evidence of widespread fraud, he is using this delay to challenge results he disfavors.
Trump has described the rise of a candidate for Los Angeles mayor as a Democratic plot. This move extends his pattern of questioning election integrity without substantial proof.
He posted on social media questioning Spencer Pratt’s potential loss in the L.A. mayoral runoffs despite Pratt’s early lead. Trump branded this situation a sign of a ‘Third World Nation.’
On the election night, Spencer Pratt, a reality TV personality endorsed by Trump, led Nithya Raman, a progressive city councilwoman. They competed for second place in the November mayoral runoff. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, secured the first spot.
As counting progressed, late-arriving mail ballots, primarily from Democrats, allowed Raman to surpass Pratt. Situations like these are termed the ‘red mirage,’ where initial Republican leads diminish as more votes are tallied.
Trump, referring to similar past events, used the slow count to allege election theft. By calling Raman’s gain a Democratic scam, he continues to undermine trust in elections. This stance offers a glimpse of how he might respond to adverse outcomes for his party in upcoming November elections, which hold significant implications for congressional control.
Trump’s approach includes discouraging Democratic mail-in voting. He suggests without evidence that using mail ballots is questionable. In a March meeting with Republican lawmakers, he highlighted the need for strict voter ID laws to limit mail ballots, considering it a strategy to maintain their majority.
