Romania Intercepts Drone Amid Rising Tensions

Romanian forces shot down a drone on Sunday, marking the third such incident within three days, as NATO aircraft respond to drones entering alliance space.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed that an F-16 fighter jet intercepted the drone at 10:13 a.m. local time. The drone was near the border with southwestern Ukraine.

Bucharest frequently reports drone activity from Ukraine, a consequence of Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports near the Danube River, which separates Romanian and Ukrainian territories. Romania’s land border with Ukraine spans about 400 miles.

As of now, drones entering NATO airspace have not been perceived as direct threats to the alliance, thus not prompting collective defensive measures. Nonetheless, these incidents have urged countries in Eastern Europe to bolster their anti-drone defenses.

According to Romania’s defense ministry, the drone was intercepted safely over seven miles northeast of the port of Sulina, within Romanian waters. Romanian authorities have yet to confirm the drone’s origin, but President Dan criticized the Russian Federation for its continued airspace violations, stressing that Romania’s sky is also NATO and EU airspace.

On Saturday, Romanian officials reported a drone incursion detected by radar systems at 8:22 a.m. local time, intercepted near the Ukrainian border. The preceding day saw NATO command deploying Romanian and Italian jets to intercept another approaching drone; investigators confirmed it was Russian-manufactured.

Debris from this interception landed near towns northeast of Bucharest without causing casualties or injuries, confirmed by Romania’s defense ministry.

Nearby, Ukraine’s Odesa region governor issued multiple air raid alerts along the border early Sunday. Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry claimed an assault on Chornomorsk port in Ukraine, aiming at military fuel tanks.
