Serena Williams revealed that her motivation to return to professional tennis was primarily for her daughters, Olympia and Adira, to witness her play. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion expressed, ‘I’ve won more than most people have in their whole lives, so it’s not that important to me. I have nothing to prove and nothing to lose, with everything to gain.’
Williams, 44, made her comeback at the HSBC Championships at the Queen’s Club in London as a wild card. Her daughters and husband, Alexis Ohanian, were present, fulfilling her goal. In a doubles match with Canadian Victoria Mboko, 19, Williams displayed excellent coordination, achieving a straight-set victory over Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. However, Mboko’s injury during a singles match against Karolína Plíšková led to her withdrawal, cutting Williams’ return short.
Williams handled the situation with poise, emphasizing her enjoyment of the sport and setting a positive example for her children. She shared moments from the event on Instagram, highlighting Olympia smiling as she watched, captioned, ‘Some moments mean more than trophies [red heart emoji] @olympiaohanian.’
Despite this setback, Williams’ return continues. She is slated to compete at the Berlin Tennis Open next week, partnering with Karolina Muchova. Commenting on her upcoming participation, Williams stated on the tournament’s website, ‘Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception. I’m excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season.’
