Firefighters in Southern California are striving to manage a critical situation involving an industrial tank filled with a toxic chemical. The tank has been under threat of explosion or rupture, posing serious risks to the surrounding area.
Over 40,000 residents remain under evacuation orders due to this hazardous event. The tank is situated at GKN Aerospace’s Garden Grove facility. The company, based in the United Kingdom, specializes in producing aircraft components.
Since Thursday, the tank has been releasing gas due to increased pressure, heightening the risk of an explosion. Firefighters have been cooling the tank with substantial amounts of water. However, efforts to stabilize the chemical using a neutralizing agent have been hindered by a failed valve.
Orange County Fire Authority’s interim fire chief, TJ McGovern, described the situation as “unprecedented” due to the chemical’s volatility. The chemical involved, methyl methacrylate, is significant in manufacturing resins and acrylic plastics like plexiglass.
