St. Charles East’s senior pitcher, Hannah Wulf, delivered a stellar performance despite some challenges in the Class 4A Bartlett Sectional championship game. Wulf, a South Carolina recruit, was unaware she was throwing a no-hitter until Fremd managed to get a lone hit against her.
Wulf described the experience: “I try not to think about a no-hitter during the game. I feel it’s a bit superstitious.” She struck out eight batters while navigating through runners, leading her team to a narrow 1-0 victory. Her pitching included four hit batters and two walks, but only one 1-2-3 inning, which occurred in the first.
St. Charles East coach Jarod Gutesha praised Wulf’s performance, noting her clutch ability in crucial moments. Both teams faced a tight strike zone, with Fremd’s senior right-hander Molly Kanupke striking out six and allowing five hits and three walks.
In the game, the Saints’ Morgan Beers scored the winning run in the sixth inning. Beers reached third after a single, a walk, and an error on an infield grounder by Fremd. Wulf credited her catcher, Hayden Sujack, for calling a great game and praised the defensive support from her teammates.
Fremd stranded seven runners, facing significant challenges, especially in the fifth inning when Audrie Corrado’s hit broke the no-hitter. Wulf responded by striking out the next three batters, aided by strong defensive plays, including efforts from senior right fielder Lexi Majkszak.
Wulf acknowledged her command issues throughout the game but emphasized the effectiveness of her curveball, which contributed to Fremd’s struggle against her pitching style.
The Saints now look forward to facing Marist in a highly anticipated rematch. Despite a previous loss to Marist, Wulf expressed confidence and excitement about competing again, believing in their chances against any team on any given day.
