The watch collecting community recognizes three brands for their exceptional legacy and craftsmanship: Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet. Known as the Holy Trinity, these brands stand out for their distinguished history and quality. While other high-end companies like A. Lange & Söhne or Breguet also produce remarkable watches, releases from the Holy Trinity tend to attract significant attention.
Recently, news broke of an unexpected collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch, sparking intrigue throughout the industry. Audemars Piguet, renowned for its iconic Royal Oak watch, has partnered with Swatch, a brand famed for affordable and accessible timepieces, to create the new Royal Pop watch.
The Royal Pop is an eye-catching addition to the watch world. Unlike the understated stainless steel that typically characterizes elite watches, the Royal Pop is available in vibrant colors. It features Swatch’s signature bioceramic material, styled in a pocket watch format with an attached lanyard. Retailing between $400 and $425, this collaboration was anticipated to draw considerable interest upon its May 16 release.
The demand for the Royal Pop defied typical economic concerns. Large crowds formed well before stores opened to secure these limited watches. Swatch had to close several stores due to safety concerns as eager customers gathered in droves. Videos and reports highlighted significant interest in acquiring the Royal Pop, despite the challenges.
Incidents at some locations became more intense, with crowd control measures needed at the Roosevelt Field Mall in New York after rowdy crowds led to police intervention. Similarly, in SoHo, excessive crowding prevented store openings. Many buyers planned to resell the watches, leading to resale prices soaring to $1,600-$2,000 on platforms like eBay.
The collaboration’s success challenges perceptions of the economic downturn. Buyers are willing to invest in the collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch, attracted by the opportunity to acquire a watch linked to the prestigious Holy Trinity at a fraction of the usual cost. The partnership offers collectors a unique chance to own a piece of high-end watchmaking history without the steep prices typically associated with it.
