Suspect in White House Shooting Had Prior Incidents and Mental Health Concerns

2 weeks ago 0

Law enforcement sources and court documents reveal that Nasire Best, the suspect in the recent shooting outside the White House, had a history of attempts to access the vicinity and potential mental health issues. Best, identified as a 21-year-old from Dundalk, Maryland, allegedly fired shots at a Secret Service checkpoint on May 24, 2026.

Documents show Best previously attempted to enter the White House in June 2025, claiming he was Jesus Christ and wishing to be arrested, leading to a mental evaluation. He made another attempt in July 2025 and was arrested for unlawful entry. Following his arraignment, he failed to appear for an August hearing, resulting in a D.C.-only bench warrant with no bond.

On Saturday, Best reportedly appeared near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, where he drew a revolver from his bag and fired at Secret Service personnel. Officers returned fire, killing Best. A bystander was injured during the incident and is recovering after successful surgery.

The shooting occurred near a Starbucks adjacent to the White House. Damage from rapid gunfire affected nearby areas, including broken glass and bullet holes visible at the White House History Shop.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigation Team will lead the inquiry into the use of force, processing the scene, gathering evidence, and interviewing witnesses. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. will review the incident to assess any support for civil rights or criminal charges.

This investigation is distinct from the internal Secret Service review by the Office of Professional Responsibility and the criminal investigation into Best’s actions.
