Thomas Frank’s tenure as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur came to an abrupt end on Wednesday, after only eight months at the helm. The club made the decision to part ways with Frank following a string of poor performances that left the team teetering just five points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.
Despite achieving some success in the Champions League by guiding the team to the round of 16, Frank was unable to replicate this form in domestic competitions. The team’s recent 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United sparked frustration among fans, as they have yet to secure a league win in 2026. Tottenham issued a statement saying, “The Club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men’s Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today. Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together. However, results and performances have led the Board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.”
Frank’s exit sets Tottenham on the search for their sixth head coach since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in 2019. The Danish coach’s appointment came after the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, who had won the Europa League and secured Champions League qualification—the club’s first major trophy in 17 years.
“If you do something right, you build something that can last,” Frank had stated, indicating his belief in the potential for long-term success.
Frank previously had a successful stint at Brentford, where he helped the club earn its status as a formidable force in the Premier League over nine years. However, his success did not transfer to Tottenham, where he recorded just seven wins out of 26 league matches.
Injuries have compounded Spurs’ troubles, with key players like James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, and Lucas Bergvall facing time on the sidelines. Furthermore, team captain Cristian Romero was unavailable against Newcastle after receiving a red card in a previous match.
Following the defeat to Newcastle, which left Tottenham in 16th place and only two spots clear of relegation, Frank expressed optimism about maintaining his position for the upcoming match against Arsenal. Nevertheless, his confidence was misplaced as the club moved swiftly in search of a change at the managerial level.
Frank joined a list of notable coaches, including Antonio Conte and José Mourinho, who have been unable to bring consistent success to Tottenham. Even Postecoglou, who achieved significant achievements, was dismissed after a poor domestic league performance, which saw the team finish in a perilous 17th place—their lowest since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
