Tracy Scroggins, Former NFL Star, Passes Away at 56

Tracy Scroggins, who made a name for himself as a linebacker with the Detroit Lions, has passed away at the age of 56, his family shared on Monday. In a heartfelt message conveyed through TMZ, they expressed their deep sorrow over the loss.

“With heavy hearts, we share the news of Tracy Scroggins’ passing,” his family expressed in their statement. They highlighted his steadfastness and determination, which left a lasting impression on those who knew him. “Tracy was not just known for his professional football career in the NFL, but more importantly, as a dedicated father, treasured family member, and sincere friend,” the family added.

Scroggins, a beloved figure on and off the field, was noted for his caring and generous nature towards those around him. His family’s statement underscores the profound impact of his kindness and dedication to his loved ones.

In their announcement, Scroggins’ family touched upon the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death, referencing potential chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as a contributing factor. This neurological condition has been connected to repeated head injuries or concussions often observed in football players.

“Playing in the NFL allowed Tracy to achieve his dream and emerge from poverty,” the family acknowledged. “Yet, the NFL also played a role in his untimely passing. During his retirement, Tracy valiantly confronted the harsh realities of CTE. Though we mourn his loss, we find solace in knowing he is now at peace.”

It remains uncertain if Scroggins’ family intends to have his brain examined for CTE. Notably, Scroggins was part of a group of players who took legal action against the NFL over concussion-related issues, aligning with the 2015 concussion settlement.

Tracy Scroggins’ professional career spanned over a decade, all spent with the Detroit Lions. Originating from Oklahoma, he was drafted in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft after an outstanding college football career at Tulsa.

Beyond football, Scroggins excelled in basketball and track during his high school years. Over his career, he recorded 60½ sacks, ranking him seventh in Detroit Lions history.
