President Donald Trump was met with a strong reaction from a packed crowd at Madison Square Garden during Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. This event took place on a Monday night.
As the national anthem played, Trump appeared on the large screen above the court. The crowd responded with a mix of cheers and boos. Trump saluted the crowd from his suite, but the boos were more noticeable before the screen shifted back to NYPD officers on the court holding flags.
Trump was attending the game with his granddaughter, Kai Trump. She stood to his right with her hand over her heart. Knicks owner James Dolan was also in the suite with Trump.
This reception in New York City differed from another significant sports event earlier in the year, the College Football National Championship. At that event, football fans warmly welcomed Trump when he appeared on the Jumbotron at Hard Rock Stadium. Surrounded by his grandchildren, the crowd erupted in cheers as he waved.
The security for Trump’s visit to New York involved extensive measures throughout the city. Madison Square Garden was secured with fences, and additional law enforcement was present. This resulted in longer lines and wait times for spectators. The NYPD announced street closures around the area, including from West 30th Street to West 35th Street between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue.
Area watch parties were also canceled due to security concerns related to Trump’s visit. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained the decision was coordinated with the Secret Service to ensure safety during the presidential visit. Tisch mentioned that New Yorkers are accustomed to this level of security when hosting a president and reassured that watch parties would return for Game 4.
Madison Square Garden later clarified that the cancellation of watch party permits was a decision by city officials, not due to Trump’s attendance.
Since starting his second term, Trump has attended various sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup.
