President Donald Trump has proposed that he might lead a rally in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. This follows claims that scheduled performers were getting nervous. Trump suggested he could replace what he called ‘highly paid, Third Rate Artists’ with his own speech as ‘the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.’
In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump indicated that performers set to appear at the event were expressing reservations about their appearances. He mentioned considering taking over personally, describing himself as someone who ‘draws larger audiences than Elvis in his prime’ and ‘does so without a guitar.’ These comments come in response to several artists originally booked for a major concert series linked to Trump’s Freedom 250 celebration, who now state they will not attend. Their withdrawal has profoundly affected the event’s lineup.
Event organizers stated that the festival is part of a national initiative to observe the 250th anniversary of the United States. Yet, early debate has focused on which entertainers will take part on stage. Of those featured on the original promotional poster, only three are confirmed to still be performing. Newsweek reached out to Freedom 250 by email on Saturday afternoon.
The semi-quincentennial celebrations also include a UFC event hosted by the president at the White House on Flag Day, June 14, coinciding with Trump’s 80th birthday. The event will feature a 5,000-seat arena and an octagonal cage on the South Lawn.
Trump’s Remarks on Freedom 250
Trump mentioned in his post that he has instructed his team to look into the possibility of changing the event into an ‘AMERICA IS BACK Rally’ at the same time and place, with attendance limited to ‘Great Patriots.’
He added that he did not want ‘so‑called Artists who are overpaid and unhappy,’ expressing a preference for ‘Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN.’ He portrayed the rally as a national revival, saying that ‘two years ago, the United States was DEAD,’ and now ‘the hottest country anywhere in the world.’ He called the potential rally a ‘Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America.’
Trump shared, ‘By this TRUTH, I am instructing my Representatives to evaluate an AMERICA IS BACK Rally on Wednesday, Washington, D.C., same time, same location.’ Several acts, including Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, Martina McBride, Milli Vanilli, and the Commodores, publicly withdrew after learning the event was run by Freedom 250 and not the nonpolitical America250 commission.
Trump has often disagreed with entertainers who avoid his events or separate themselves from his political brand. Political analysts note that Trump’s rallies are critical for energizing his base, often overshadowing traditional campaign operations.
Understanding Freedom 250
Freedom 250 is a public‑private partnership established to lead the 250th anniversary celebrations of the U.S. Its programming includes a significant 16‑day festival on the National Mall known as the Great American State Fair. This fair is free, and organizers promote it as central to the national America250 celebrations.
The organization presents the initiative as a nationwide, World’s Fair‑like commemoration aiming to ‘honor our history and engage all Americans,’ featuring live entertainment, cultural exhibits, military demonstrations, and programs representing all states and territories.
While the fair is promoted as nonpartisan, reports suggest the Trump administration supports it. This link has led to controversy after many artists cited in promotional materials said they were unaware of any political connections.
Despite the reduced lineup, Freedom 250 continues to advertise the fair as a unifying national event, highlighting its mission to ‘uplift and unite America’ in its semiquincentennial year.
Freedom 250 focuses on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans, welcoming those who share our goal of marking this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America,” Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner told Newsweek in an emailed statement.
