The U.S. Men’s National Team has recently showcased its potential with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Former U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard highlighted this win as a testament to the team’s growing strength ahead of their next match against Australia.

This victory attracted a record-breaking 24.9 million viewers, marking the largest soccer audience in U.S. history. During the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D match held at Los Angeles Stadium, players like Folarin Balogun and Christian Pulisic played pivotal roles in the team’s success.

“So many good things, so many contributions,” Howard shared with OutKick. “It’s really good to win a game and say, ‘Gosh, I wish we almost had six.’ That’s a good place to be.”

Howard pointed out Balogun’s two goals, Pulisic’s attacking influence, and strong defensive maneuvers as crucial elements of their play. He emphasized that the substitutes also made valuable contributions, highlighting the depth within the squad.

The goalkeeper position now seems clear with Matt Freese emerging as the leading choice over veteran Matt Turner. Howard stated, “I don’t think there’s any competition now. I think Matt Freese is the goalkeeper.”

Looking towards the upcoming clash with Australia, Howard anticipates a different type of challenge. He noted Australia’s physical approach and the need for the U.S. team to maintain their rhythm.

“It’s going to be a physical game,” Howard noted. “The Australian team plays that way, but if they disrupt the U.S. rhythm, they give themselves a good chance.”

Despite the anticipated challenge, Howard remains confident about the U.S. team’s chances. “The U.S. will play the Australians off the park,” he stated, provided they match Australia’s physicality.

Off the field, Howard mentioned the importance of fan support and initiatives like Jim Beam’s Home Field Advantage campaign to strengthen the soccer culture in the U.S. This cultural development is seen as a critical component in building momentum toward the 2026 World Cup hosted on home soil.

“There’s a cultural and togetherness aspect of soccer,” Howard remarked. “We need to build this culture and hype around this team and help propel them, as best we can, on and off the field, toward greatness.”

Howard concluded by emphasizing the role of fans in fostering the team’s success, both through direct support and cultivating an enthusiastic atmosphere.
