On Sunday, the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes became the scene of a shocking riot during a French Ligue 1 football match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC. Chaos erupted after just 22 minutes, leading to the abrupt abandonment of the game.
A massive group of hooded ultras breached stadium security, storming the pitch and causing an invasion. The score was tied at 0-0 when violence broke out. The match, held on May 17, 2026, saw dozens of angry Nantes supporters expressing outrage over their team’s poor performance.
Fans overwhelmed stewards, smashing through barriers to gain access to the field. Anti-riot police responded with tear gas to push the supporters back. The rioters, dressed in black and concealing their faces, threw flares and pyrotechnics onto the pitch, prompting players to flee to safety.
Riot police, equipped with tactical gear, entered the field to restore order. After a tense standoff, they managed to push back the invaders. Officials quickly decided the match should be permanently called off for player safety reasons.
The security lapse drew condemnation from French government officials. Marina Ferrari, France’s Minister of Sports, criticized the pitch invasion, calling it “unacceptable.” French football officials now face pressure to address growing hooliganism. FC Nantes is expected to face punishments due to the incident.
