Shots were fired near the northwestern corner of the White House complex while President Trump was inside the building. Secret Service returned fire, killing the gunman.
The incident took place at the northwestern corner of the White House grounds on Saturday evening. The gunman approached the White House, retrieved a firearm from a bag, and opened fire before being shot and killed by Secret Service officers.
A bystander was also hit by gunfire, according to Secret Service officials. However, no details regarding the identity or condition of this individual were provided. No Secret Service officers sustained injuries.
President Trump, who was present in the White House at the time, expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement for their response. He described the gunman as having “a violent history” and a “possible obsession” with the White House.
Shooter Information
The gunman was identified as Nasire Best, 21 years old. According to officials familiar with the investigation, Best was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Mr. Best had a prior incident in July, where he was arrested for entering a restricted area on the White House grounds and ignoring warnings. An affidavit in D.C. Superior Court indicated that he was known to Secret Service personnel for attempting to access various entry points of the White House complex.
In June, he was also held involuntarily for obstructing vehicle entry on the east side of the White House. At that time, despite being charged with unlawful entry, he had no pending warrants. During his arrest, he claimed to be “Jesus Christ” and expressed a desire to be apprehended.
