YouTube talent is redefining success in Hollywood. New films like ‘Backrooms’ illustrate this trend. Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, ‘Backrooms’ is a psychological horror film currently showing in 3,400 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. As of Thursday, the film has earned substantial interest, with predictions indicating it could rake in at least $60 million by the end of Sunday.
Parsons, a first-time director, gained recognition through his YouTube channel, where his videos have garnered a stunning 342 million views. This film’s performance highlights the shift in entertainment, where YouTube creators are translating online fame into box office success.
‘Backrooms’ is not alone in this shift. Other directors without Hollywood backgrounds, like Curry Barker and Mark Fischbach, have found similar success. Their films have also captured significant audience interest at the box office.
Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school, described this transition as the start of a significant change in the film industry. According to him, these directors are part of a new generation of filmmakers bringing fresh perspectives.
Among the successes is ‘Obsession,’ directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, a creator known for comedy and horror videos. ‘Obsession,’ a film made for $750,000, has already generated $74 million in North America in two weeks. Analysts believe it could surpass $100 million by the end of its run.
