Jill Biden has expressed her reflections on supporting former President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign in 2024 despite challenges faced during his public appearances. She shared insights during an interview with Craig Melvin on TODAY, highlighting themes from her new memoir, “View From the West Wing: A Memoir.” The book covers the period around Joe Biden’s debate with Donald Trump in June 2024, an event that ultimately led to him withdrawing from the presidential race.
Craig Melvin questioned Jill Biden on her stance regarding her husband’s candidacy if she could revisit past decisions. She stated, “As I look back, would I want to put Joe through the hurt and the pain that we felt during that time? Never.” She emphasized that the decision to run had to be entirely his own.
Despite publicly commendable remarks immediately after the debate where she described his performance as “great,” doubts were raised about Joe Biden’s cognitive capabilities during the event. Jill Biden acknowledged the internal conflict, stating, “My mind is racing. What do I say to him? What do I say to him? I’m his wife. I’ve got to lift him up.” She stressed the importance of supporting him in front of their supporters, rather than publicly criticizing the debate performance.
Kamala Harris, who succeeded Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, shared her perspective in her memoir “107 Days,” titled in reference to the time frame before Biden’s withdrawal. Harris wrote that his exit was not linked to mental incapacity, emphasizing it was a personal decision.
Accusations of cognitive issues were met with defense from Joe Biden, who took legal steps to prevent the release of certain memoir-related conversations. The concerns were documented by former special counsel Robert Hur in a report on mishandling classified materials, a claim dismissed by the White House.
Joe Biden faced scrutiny through the book “Original Sin” by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, who described an incident where the former president purportedly did not recognize actor George Clooney. In response, Biden argued against the claims, stating, “There’s nothing to sustain that.”
Additionally, Joe Biden disclosed health challenges. He revealed a prostate cancer diagnosis and subsequent radiation treatment, alongside previous skin cancer surgery in 2025. Jill Biden commented on his condition, noting its metastasis to his bones and stating, “He’s doing OK.” She outlined the complexity of his health journey, adding, “Joe will live with cancer till the rest of his life.”
