In May, the Chicago White Sox achieved an impressive 18 wins, marking their highest monthly win total since May 2021, where they secured 19 victories. General Manager Chris Getz shared his views on the team’s performance before a game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. “It was a quality month,” mentioned Getz, highlighting the successful series against Minnesota and Detroit on their homestand.
The team won three games out of four against the Twins and achieved a three-game sweep over the Tigers. The homestand concluded with a 2-1 victory against Detroit, marking their 16th comeback win of the season, the most in the American League. Getz praised the team for their resilience, “Even in games where we were trailing, they never gave in.” This perseverance contributed significantly to their 18-10 record in May, placing them second in the AL with a .643 winning percentage, only behind the Tampa Bay Rays.
The White Sox face some challenges as first baseman Munetaka Murakami entered the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. This injury, sustained on a Friday game, opened up opportunities for other players. Jacob Gonzalez, performing well in Triple-A with 19 home runs in two months, stepped up in Murakami’s absence. “His first game was positive with good at-bats,” Getz noted, emphasizing that while Gonzalez is not expected to replace Murakami entirely, his contribution is valuable.
Murakami’s recovery could span four to six weeks, leaving room for the team’s depth to be tested. “It’s important not to rush conclusions about his recovery,” Getz cautioned. Gonzalez, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2023, went 1-for-3 in a Sunday game, exemplifying the impact of called-up players this season. Managers in the Sox minor-league system have played a significant role in preparing these players for major-league performance. “We feel really good about our minor-league managers,” said Getz, attributing part of the team’s success to the efforts of managers like Chad Pinder and the development staff.
In an injury update, outfielder Austin Hays’ rehab assignment was halted due to recurring soreness in his left calf. Hays has been on the injured list since May 2 with a left calf strain, underlining the team’s ongoing struggles with player fitness.
