Scott Pelley Fired After Dispute Over ’60 Minutes’ Direction

3 days ago 0

On June 2, 2026, CBS News terminated Scott Pelley, a prominent journalist associated with the network. This decision followed escalating tensions concerning the future of ’60 Minutes,’ America’s leading news program.

Mr. Pelley, at the age of 68, had been a correspondent for ’60 Minutes’ and previously anchored ‘CBS Evening News.’ He had been with CBS since 1989. The termination came one day after a staff meeting where Mr. Pelley accused Bari Weiss, CBS’s editor in chief, of undermining ’60 Minutes.’ This accusation was linked to the recent dismissal of the program’s leadership team and two of its on-air correspondents.

“We have parted ways with Scott Pelley,” stated Nick Bilton, the recently appointed executive producer of ’60 Minutes,’ in a memo circulated to the show’s employees.

CBS News chose not to publicly comment on the matter. However, a formal letter sent to Mr. Pelley from Mr. Bilton indicated that he was “terminated for cause effective immediately,” a copy of which The New York Times obtained.

In a phone interview conducted shortly after his firing, Mr. Pelley expressed his deep commitment to ’60 Minutes.’ He recounted the personal sacrifices made throughout his career, including reporting from combat zones such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine, where he faced considerable danger.
