Europe’s Strategy to Reduce Dependence on U.S. Technology

The European Union has revealed a detailed plan to decrease the region’s reliance on American technology. This move aims to bolster its own tech capabilities and safeguard its economic future and geopolitical security.

The plan includes increased government investment in local tech industries to expedite the development of data centers and rejuvenate the semiconductor sector. European governments and firms are encouraged to source technology from local providers, especially where security is a concern.

Concerns have grown among European leaders about their dependency on American technology in fields such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and semiconductors. This dependency is seen as a vulnerability, potentially allowing future U.S. administrations to disrupt access to vital tech services. Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, emphasized the risk of relying on foreign technologies for crucial services.

The technology sovereignty initiative is expected to intensify tensions with the Trump administration, given previous disagreements on trade, Ukraine, and Greenland. Jamieson Greer, the U.S. trade representative, hinted at retaliatory measures against Europe’s digital policies.

Efforts are underway to finalize a trade agreement with the United States, with a deadline set for July 4. The European Parliament will vote on the technology package by mid-June, ahead of this deadline.
