Reality TV Star Spencer Pratt Challenges LA Mayor Karen Bass

Reality television personality Spencer Pratt is making a notable move in the Los Angeles mayoral race. He aims to unseat incumbent Mayor Karen Bass this November. Bass has been in office since 2022. Her tenure has been marked by her management of wildfire responses.

The primary election on Tuesday saw no candidate gaining a majority, pushing Bass and Pratt into a November runoff. This development is significant for Bass, who is endorsed by prominent Democrats like Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris. Her long political career in California adds to this contest’s significance.

Spencer Pratt, recognized from the MTV reality show “The Hills,” held the second-place position as of Wednesday morning following the primary. He has criticized Bass on persistent city issues such as fire recovery, homelessness, and crime. Pratt attributes the devastating wildfires, which affected thousands of structures including his own home, to Bass’s shortcomings.

Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman, once a competitor from the left, seems to be out of the race despite her progressive ambitions. She trails behind Pratt and Bass as vote counting continues. Raman is known for her Democratic Socialists of America membership and her call for more progressive policies.

Pratt, although a Republican in a predominantly Democrat-leaning city, has caught the attention of voters discontented with Bass’s governance. Rep. Darrell Issa noted Pratt’s appeal among disappointed Democrat voters due to Bass’s perceived ineffectiveness on various issues. Issa commented on the state of city management, citing crime and other ongoing problems.

Despite criticisms, Mayor Bass maintains her administration is steering Los Angeles towards improvement. Her campaign claims that homelessness is declining, housing developments are advancing, and new officers are joining the LAPD. Bass argues that her proactive decisions at City Hall mark a pivotal moment for Los Angeles.
