Dylan Larkin’s Trade Request and Its Impact on the Red Wings

1 day ago 0

Toward the end of last season, the Detroit Red Wings appeared to have a chance at reaching the postseason for the first time since 2016. Unfortunately, they did not achieve this goal. To complicate matters, reports now suggest that their captain, Dylan Larkin, desires a trade.

According to Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet, the 29-year-old Larkin has requested a trade. The reasons include the Red Wings’ frequent playoff misses and a strained relationship with General Manager Steve Yzerman, a franchise legend. The report, which cites ‘multiple sources,’ has not seen any comments from Larkin, his agent, or Yzerman.

Drafted 15th overall by the Red Wings in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Larkin has accumulated 643 points over 808 games. He serves as a top-line center with a cap hit of $8.7 million, as reported by Puck Pedia, and is under contract until 2031. These factors make him an appealing trade target across the league.

Larkin’s performance has been strong, both with the Red Wings and Team USA. He was part of the Four Nations Face-off team last year and contributed to this year’s U.S. Olympic team, which secured a gold medal.

For the next two seasons, Larkin’s full no-trade clause means he must approve any potential trade. While this situation may seem unfavorable for the Red Wings, it could serve as an opportunity. A timely trade could allow the team to ask for substantial returns, possibly leading to a necessary team reset aimed at future playoff success.
