1 hour ago 0

PEORIA — On Friday, Marist junior Lexi Kyros faced a challenging game offensively, but her defensive prowess was undeniable. The Michigan commit demonstrated her skills behind the plate during a Class 4A state semifinal against Lincoln-Way West at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

In rapid succession, Kyros executed two crucial plays: throwing out a runner at the plate and preventing another from stealing second. These efforts highlighted why she is a top recruit. Kyros expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “As long as I can keep us throwing the least amount of pitches possible, the better it is. I want everything for this team.”

“I’ve said it a million times, as many things as I can do, as many outs as I can get for them, I will.”

After a 2-1 upset loss to Lincoln-Way West, Marist focused on positives. Players Maddie Rogers, Layla Peters, and Ellie Holmstrom had two hits each. Soleil Tate, a Wisconsin commit, struck out six batters. Abby Brueggmann secured the win for Lincoln-Way West, striking out four and stranding eight runners.

Despite the defeat, Marist achieved a milestone by reaching the state competition, having fallen short in the supersectional the previous season. “So this was very huge getting here,” Kyros said. “We didn’t want anything else but to be here.”

In a previous game on March 30, Marist defeated Lincoln-Way West 11-5 in New Lenox. However, in Peoria, the wind wasn’t favorable. Kyros acknowledged, “We just left too many girls on base. I didn’t execute when I had to.”

During a critical moment in the third inning, with Lincoln-Way West leading 2-0, Kyros made a backhand flip to Tate, preventing a run. “I practice a million of those, so I know what to do if it ever happens,” Kyros shared. She later ended the inning by throwing out a runner attempting to steal.

Maddie Rogers praised Kyros as a leader and team player, emphasizing her role in supporting the team. Coach Colleen Phelan added, “Lexi always has her head in the game. We’re thankful for the beating she takes there for the team.”

Looking ahead, Kyros is determined to improve. “I think I could have done better in a lot of places. I definitely want more for next year,” she stated.
