Scottie Scheffler faced a challenging start at The Memorial Tournament. His frustrations were evident after a difficult shot during the opening round on Thursday.
Scheffler’s trouble began on the No. 16 hole at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. His shot initially landed on the green but then bounced into the water. Surprised by this turn of events, Scheffler expressed his frustration to his caddie, Tedd Scott.
“I don’t know what to do,” Scheffler remarked, adding, “I can’t hear a word you’re saying.”
A video emerging on X captured these moments, highlighting his disappointment as they walked the course. Scheffler felt he made a good shot, yet found himself dealing with the water hazard.
“Absolutely flushed a seven iron, and we get the wind wrong, and now I’m in the water,” he told Scott. Struggling with the wind conditions, Scheffler had difficulty seeing his shots land as he intended.
Scheffler’s resulting double bogey earned mixed reactions from fans. Some felt he was overreacting with criticism towards his caddie.
“Is it just me or is Scottie getting harder to watch from an attitude perspective?” one fan commented. “Like a child… melts down when things don’t go his way,” another noted.
Despite the unexpected setback, Scott refrained from responding to Scheffler’s venting. Commentators noted that part of Scott’s role is to absorb such emotions during tense moments on the course.
Despite a rough start, Scheffler remains a competitive force. He had a promising start to the 2026 season, winning The American Express. His notable performances include a second-place finish at this year’s Masters, indicating his potential.
At Thursday’s end, Scheffler was 1-over par (73), tying him for 33rd on the leaderboard and keeping him within range for another victory. Currently, J.J. Spaun, Wyndham Clark, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ryan Gerard share the lead.
The pressure to uphold his dominance may challenge Scheffler. His current struggles reflect a golfer attempting to recreate past triumphs, such as his win at Pete Dye Stadium Course.
