Controversies Surrounding Maine Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Platner

14 hours ago 0

Some former partners of Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner have come forward with serious allegations. These claims involve inappropriate behaviors, including expressing rape fantasies, excessive drinking, and violent behavior.

Platner is already under scrutiny due to various controversies. These include his Nazi-associated chest tattoo, alleged inappropriate messaging with younger women, and finding humor in an attack on Teddy Daniels, a former Pennsylvania lieutenant gubernatorial candidate.

Allegations and Reactions

One of Platner’s ex-girlfriends, Lyndsey Fifield, spoke to the New York Times. They met in 2013 when Platner was at George Washington University. Fifield was involved with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at the time. She detailed discomfort with Platner’s chest tattoo, which features a Totenkopf, linked to Nazi death camp guards. Platner had reportedly used this tattoo as a symbol for his military unit.

She explained how Platner would talk about violent fantasies, such as raping home invaders to assert dominance. She also recounted an incident where he dragged her from a taxi during a dispute. Concerns were further roused by Platner’s tendency to sharpen an ax while watching television, coupled with his expressed thoughts on dominating perceived threats.

Platner’s Acknowledgment

Platner acknowledged his struggles with PTSD from military service, admitting to self-medicating with alcohol. He stated he was not proud of his past behaviors and expressed remorse, emphasizing his growth since that period.

Platner’s campaign countered Fifield’s claims by highlighting her political leanings and dedication to Republican causes. Despite this, Fifield clarified she had no association with Sen. Susan Collins, the incumbent Republican that Platner challenges.

Other Allegations

In addition to Fifield, another woman identified as Jenny Racicot spoke out. Racicot, a fellow Maine Democrat, cited Platner’s controversial social media posts as evidence of his issues with women. Another former partner, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed these concerns, mentioning Platner’s heavy drinking and dominance in their relationship.

The Republican National Committee viewed these reports as part of a troubling pattern, suggesting Maine voters should be informed about Platner’s actions.

Campaign Focus

Despite the scandals, Platner’s campaign remains focused on progressive economic policies. These include higher taxes on billionaires and providing tax relief for working-class citizens. The Republican National Committee continues to question the Democrats’ support for Platner amidst these revelations.
