Concerns Over Online Child Safety Highlighted by Louisiana Case

2 hours ago 0

LAS VEGAS — Livingston Parish deputies recently carried out a search warrant on a suspect’s home, discovering him using voice-changing technology to impersonate a teenage girl while conversing with a real child online. This was precisely the crime they intended to apprehend him for.

He had a 14-year-old girl on the phone, disguising his voice. This is terrifying with these devices and apps offering no consequences, stated Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard. This child had no idea they were speaking to a man in his forties.

Authorities report that the suspect was active on Roblox, a popular online gaming app among children. As a registered sex offender, he should not have been using it.

Ard compared these devices to a modern-day ‘white van’ that is present in homes, emphasizing their potential danger. Although Roblox does not support voice modulation, this case is part of a lawsuit against the company by the state.

Statewide Crackdown on Child Predators

Louisiana has been aggressively pursuing child sex predators, as highlighted by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill in a recent CrimeCon panel in Las Vegas.

This is not a victimless crime, Murrill said. Children are being exploited for pornography and suffering serious harm.

She shared instances where children were enticed away from homes over great distances before being rescued.

This year, Louisiana anticipates around 90,000 tips related to online child exploitation. By May 2026, more than 30,000 had been processed, leading to numerous arrests across the state.

Ard noted that many parents remain unaware of what to watch for, drawing parallels to past warnings about strangers in vehicles.

Role of Technology Companies

The Louisiana initiative focuses on known predators, who often bypass restrictions to access social media and gaming platforms.

Companies like Roblox need to act, Ard remarked. We must take necessary measures to combat this issue.

Roblox is frequently mentioned in lawsuits alleging its platform provides opportunities for predators. Murrill led a legal action against Roblox last summer, claiming it is a hazardous environment for vulnerable children.

In response, Roblox stated the allegations misrepresent their platform, noting their extensive safety measures. The company claims its latest AI system scans scenes for harmful content, and shares it cannot facilitate image or video sharing between users.

Roblox emphasizes collaboration with law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Chats are always monitored, and age restrictions are enforced for interaction capabilities.

We implemented over 100 new safety features last year, said Roblox CEO David Baszucki. We also prohibit image and video sharing, ensuring a safe environment.

A recent policy enforces age verification for chat access, restricting under-nine users to only chat with peers.
