The New York Knicks are heading back to Madison Square Garden with two victories away from breaking their championship drought. Jalen Brunson hit a decisive free throw in the closing moments on Friday night, securing the Knicks a 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
Earlier in the game, Victor Wembanyama missed a crucial jumper that could have shifted the game’s momentum in favor of San Antonio. In the match, Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges each contributed 20 points to the Knicks’ effort. The team has achieved 13 consecutive wins, which is the second-longest streak recorded by any team in NBA playoff history.
The Knicks have now become just the third team to win the initial two games of the finals while on the road. Previously, this achievement was accomplished by Michael Jordan’s 1993 Chicago Bulls and Hakeem Olajuwon’s 1995 Houston Rockets. Both teams eventually went on to win their respective championships. The Bulls needed six games to defeat the Phoenix Suns, and the Rockets reached their victory after sweeping the Orlando Magic. The Knicks aspire to become champions for the first time since 1973.
Although Wembanyama had a subdued first half, he finished with a strong 29 points. De’Aaron Fox also added 20 points to the Spurs’ tally. The series now shifts to New York, with Game 3 scheduled at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.
During the game, the Spurs overcame a 12-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter. They managed to take the lead for the first time in nearly two quarters when Wembanyama completed a three-point play with 57 seconds remaining, putting San Antonio ahead 104-102.
Brunson responded on the next possession, achieving his seventh basket out of 24 shots that night, leveling the score once again. Wembanyama failed a long-range jumper, allowing OG Anunoby to secure the rebound for New York with 30 seconds left. The Knicks subsequently called a timeout to strategize.
The Spurs got the defensive stop required, yet Victor Wembanyama committed a turnover shortly after. Jalen Brunson was fouled soon after and scored the vital points, putting the Knicks ahead for good just as the clock expired. Game 3 will commence at 8:30 p.m. Monday in New York.
