Steve Hilton’s Path to California’s Governorship Faces Challenges

1 week ago 0

Republican Steve Hilton is prepared to compete in the general-election race against former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Hilton aims to become California’s first Republican governor in 15 years. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is term-limited, which leaves an open seat, providing Republicans a chance they intend to seize. The GOP has rallied support behind Hilton, hoping that state frustrations over illegal immigration and crime can help Hilton secure the governor’s office.

The Decision Desk announced Hilton’s advancement to the general election, backed by President Donald Trump, who acknowledged his progress on Truth Social. According to the Associated Press, Hilton is holding second place with 25.1% of the votes, while Democrat Tom Steyer trails at 22.4%. As of early Tuesday, 83% of the votes are counted, though no definitive call has been made for the second candidate.

Hilton’s Electoral Chances

Polls suggest Hilton could contend for governor, but he faces significant challenges. A SurveyUSA poll just before the election indicated Hilton and Steyer both held 20% of the vote, with Becerra at 17%. Another Emerson College poll placed Becerra first with 28%, Steyer second with 22%, and Hilton third at 21%.

With the primary concluded, the Democrats’ lead over Hilton might expand. The primary field was crowded, and while Republicans united behind Hilton, Democrats divided their support among several candidates, including Becerra and Steyer. If Democrats unify around one candidate, Hilton’s deficit may grow as the general election approaches.

Kalshi odds indicated Hilton had only a 7% chance of winning, starkly contrasting Becerra’s 70%. Polymarket provided similar projections.

Hilton’s Positioning and Strategy

Hilton, previously a Fox News host, is well-known and has a distinct ideological stance. His campaign focuses on lowering taxes, addressing crime, and opposing failed Democratic initiatives. Trump supports Hilton, promising assistance if Hilton wins and assuring Californians of potential betterment under Hilton’s leadership. Hilton vows to investigate Newsom for fraud if elected.

Despite Republican unity, Hilton needs more backing to succeed as governor. California has twice as many registered Democrats compared to Republicans. Winning requires him to attract independents or Democrats to his cause. Discontent with the economy and Newsom’s leadership may influence voter turnout, potentially aiding Hilton.

Recent Republican Success in California

Arnold Schwarzenegger was the last Republican to win the governorship in California, securing reelection in 2006. At the time, Republicans and Democrats had closer voter registration numbers, with Republicans at 5.4 million and Democrats at 6.7 million. Currently, there are over 10 million registered Democrats versus about 5 million Republicans.

Fundraising Overview

In 2023, Hilton gathered over $7 million for his campaign, with nearly half incoming after April 19. This indicates a rising appeal. His war chest surpasses Becerra’s, who raised slightly over $6 million this year, with most donations post-April 19. Steyer, however, boasts over $160 million in campaign funds.

Hilton’s ability to attract support from independents and potentially Democrats is crucial to becoming California’s first Republican governor in 15 years.

Becerra Advances to General Election

Xavier Becerra has secured a spot in California’s November gubernatorial race following Friday’s primary. As a Democrat and former California attorney general, he capitalizes on his extensive public service and stands as a counterbalance to Trump. Becerra centers his campaign on affordability issues, such as housing costs and energy prices.

His success in the general election could mark a historic moment as California’s first Latino governor in more than a century. Although his experience and skills are recognized by supporters, some critics question his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and challenges faced in the Biden administration.
