Mount Carmel’s Star Player on the Path to Victory
Cullen Winters aims to earn two championship rings during his junior year at Mount Carmel. As a vital defensive back, he contributed to the Caravan’s Class 8A football title win last fall. His recent success in baseball could replicate that triumph.
“Winning it in two sports in one year would be pretty cool,” Winters shared. “I’ve got experience from football to help me, and hopefully we can achieve success in baseball too.”
Key Moment in Crestwood Supersectional
Winters ensured Mount Carmel’s baseball prospects by securing a go-ahead RBI single during the eighth inning. This play resulted in a 6-3 victory over Sandburg in the Class 4A Crestwood Supersectional at Ozinga Field.
Triton commit Logan Fernandez contributed with a two-run double for the 30-10 Caravan. Georgetown recruit Brady Holland ended with a double, a run, and an RBI. Cowley commit Jonathan Osornio added a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning. “I just needed to get my team out of that to keep us in the game,” Matise said regarding the seventh inning situation. “I had to get us out of that jam, any way possible.”
Lewis recruit Jake Matise resolved a bases-loaded situation in the seventh to extend the game into extra innings, finishing decisively to secure the win. Mount Carmel will play Friday in a state semifinal against the victor of Tuesday’s Schaumburg Supersectional.
Sandburg’s Response
Sandburg matched the score at 3-3 in the seventh. Roosevelt recruit Giovanni Longo’s two-run home run and Nick Seaman’s single, followed by Lucas Rosas’ sacrifice fly, led to the tie.
The Eagles faced a bases-loaded scenario with two outs when Matise induced a flyout on a 3-2 pitch. “I knew I had to put the ball in play,” Winters stated. “I just found a hole during a significant moment.”
Postseason Performance
Winters excelled at the Brother Rice Sectional, delivering a 5-for-9 performance with three RBIs over two games.
“In the playoffs, Cullen’s been performing clutch in hitting and fielding,” Matise noted. “He’s making key catches, including difficult conditions like rain.”
Mount Carmel Coach Brian Hurry expressed excitement about Winters’ potential after witnessing his football capabilities. “Cullen is a fierce competitor,” Hurry shared. “I realized this during football season and knew he’d bring that mentality to baseball.”
Winters confirmed, “I hit a double on the first pitch during the St. Laurence game after extra practice, boosting my confidence.”
