Messi Shines Bright in World Cup Opener Against Algeria

1 hour ago 0

Lionel Messi, sporting Argentina’s iconic white-and-blue jersey, found his emotions overwhelming as he led his team against Algeria in their World Cup opener. Despite questions about his hamstring injury, Messi’s performance silenced any doubts by scoring all three goals in Argentina’s 3-0 victory, tying him with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the tournament’s career scoring record.

“My tears after the first goal? I’ve had some tough days, unrelated to football, and those emotions were because of that,” said Messi, thanking his teammates and staff for their support.

Messi’s memorable first goal came from a skillful pass by Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul. His second was a quick reaction to a rebound, and he completed the hat trick with a precise strike. The crowd of 69,045, most supporting Argentina, rewarded him with a standing ovation as he left the field.

“At a loss for words about Leo. What can I say? He’s incredible,” said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.

Messi’s World Cup Legacy

The match marked two decades since Messi debuted in the World Cup, becoming the second player to score in five editions. With 16 goals across six World Cup appearances, Messi seems poised to surpass Klose’s record. The hat trick was his 61st career hat trick, 11 of which were with Argentina, and his first at a World Cup.

“I’m very happy and grateful for this wonderful group. I enjoy it so much,” Messi reflected, regarding his achievements.

Elsewhere, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland also excelled. Mbappé scored twice in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal, tying for fourth on the World Cup goals list with 14. Haaland scored twice in Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq.

“Messi is a madman,” Haaland remarked on social media.

Messi’s Resilience Amid Setbacks

Previously hindered by a minor hamstring issue, Messi showed no signs of trouble during Argentina’s victory. He showcased his fitness, contributing to a penalty goal in a warm-up against Iceland before the tournament.

“This is my sixth World Cup, and I still feel like I’m in good shape,” Messi said. Starting the tournament with victory is crucial according to Messi, as first games are typically challenging.

Messi’s match against Algeria was his 200th international appearance since his debut in 2005. Only Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Kuwait’s Bader al-Mutawa have more appearances. Notably, Messi and Ronaldo are the only two players to score in five World Cups.

Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic praised Messi, highlighting the team’s support for him, enabling his extraordinary achievements for years.

Messi-Mania in Kansas City

Argentina, based in Kansas City along with three other national teams, has drawn Messi fans to the area. On match day, fans in No. 10 jerseys filled the stadium, with some attending a watch party downtown where a goat in an Argentina jersey appeared on stage. Many view this as symbolic of Messi’s status as the greatest of all time.

“Having Leo is an advantage,” stated De Paul. “He prioritizes the group, not individual records, and his presence pushes us forward.”
