The upcoming Artemis III mission by NASA will introduce a new element to astronaut attire. The mission features a collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space, offering a fresh design for astronaut wear.
Prada and Axiom Space announced their partnership at a recent event in Prada’s SoHo store in Manhattan. They presented the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (L.C.V.G.), which NASA astronauts will don underneath Axiom’s Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit during lunar expeditions.
The news came ahead of the Artemis III crew announcement. The event took place in a space designed by Rem Koolhaas, featuring servers offering champagne and green juice to attendees. The scene included Prada’s luxury items and a display of the new bodysuit.
Jonathan Cirtain, CEO of Axiom Space, expressed admiration for the suit’s design during the presentation. The L.C.V.G. is a further development of the collaboration that started between Prada and Axiom Space in 2023. Previously, they produced the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU).
The L.C.V.G. features a combination of yarns that include titanium, along with stirrup pants and tubing contouring the wearer’s body to aid cooling. This version of the garment is a significant aesthetic improvement over previous iterations.
Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s chief marketing officer, compared the garment to “very comfortable, supernice pajamas”. The design aims to offer functionality combined with a look akin to a superhero outfit.
