NASA’s Artemis III Crew Announced: All-Male Team for Moon Mission

1 week ago 0

NASA has unveiled the crew for its upcoming Artemis III mission, part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to return humans to the moon. The team will include four astronauts, each bringing unique experience and background to the mission.

The Artemis III crew comprises Commander Randy Bresnik, pilot Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency (ESA), and mission specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas. Among them, Mr. Douglas is notable for being Black, while Mr. Rubio is the first astronaut of Salvadoran descent. Mr. Parmitano stands out as the ESA’s first officer to serve on an Artemis mission. Notably absent from this crew is female representation.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman addressed media questions at a briefing following the announcement. He emphasized that the selection was based on the astronauts’ capabilities to meet the mission’s needs. He further mentioned that the recent astronaut candidate class by NASA included more women than men, suggesting a shift in gender balance for future missions.

This upcoming mission follows closely on the heels of Artemis II, which made headlines in April by bringing a diverse crew near the moon. That crew included Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. It was historic, with Mr. Glover becoming the first Black astronaut near the moon, Ms. Koch the first woman, and Mr. Hansen the first Canadian on such a mission.

Initially, NASA committed to landing the first woman, person of color, and non-American astronaut on the lunar surface. However, this commitment was quietly adjusted on NASA’s website amid policy changes imposed by the government in early 2025. This involved restrictions on various diversity and inclusion measures.
