Trump’s Continued Influence in GOP

President Donald Trump showcases his strong influence in the 2026 primary season. Every candidate he endorsed won their contests. Fox News’ Madeleine Rivera highlighted Ken Paxton’s victory in the Texas Senate primary runoff. This continues to affirm Trump’s significant power within the GOP during this primary cycle.

Dina Titus Secures Democratic Nomination

On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Dina Titus won the Democratic primary in Nevada’s 1st Congressional District. She defeated challengers Gabriel Cornejo, Joy Hoover, and Luis Paniagua. This win secures her nomination for an eighth term in Congress. Titus, representing the Las Vegas area since 2013, maintained her frontrunner status. She garnered support from labor unions and Democratic organizations and held fundraising advantages.

Titus faced criticism that Democrats needed fresh leadership. However, she emphasized her record on crucial issues like tourism, transportation, and veterans’ affairs in Southern Nevada. These efforts helped her succeed in her primary campaign.

Titus’ Political Background

Dina Titus, first elected to Congress in 2008 from Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, returned in 2012 post-redistricting. Before Congress, she served two decades in the Nevada Senate and taught political science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Despite challenges, Titus’ opponents struggled to gain traction. The race was overshadowed by larger statewide contests. Opponents like Hoover, Cornejo, and Paniagua presented themselves as alternatives. However, they failed to overcome Titus’ long-standing incumbency.

General Election Outlook

The focus now shifts to the general election. Titus will face the Republican nominee in a more competitive district due to redistricting. The Cook Political Report rates Nevada’s 1st Congressional District as “Likely Democrat.” This reflects the district’s Democratic leanings and Titus’ incumbency. The district includes Eastern Las Vegas, Henderson, Paradise, and surrounding Clark County communities. According to the Cook Partisan Voting Index, it has a D+2 rating.

Republicans have not held this seat since former Rep. John Ensign’s departure in 1999. The current political climate creates a dynamic environment for the upcoming election.
