A devastating suicide bombing struck a passenger train in Pakistan, causing at least 23 fatalities and injuring approximately 70 others, as reported by The Associated Press (AP). The attack happened in Quetta, the capital of the Balochistan province. The explosion occurred when an explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a railway line as the train passed, overturning two cars and setting them ablaze. This region has witnessed ongoing insurgency activity, involving separatist and militant groups.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The group stated the targeted train was carrying security personnel, as reported by the Times of India. The train was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar for the Eid holidays and carried army personnel and their families. The BLA focuses on separatism from Pakistan, and such attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in the region.

Witnesses reported shockwaves from the blast, which overturned and ignited two train cars, releasing thick smoke into the air. Images shared on social media showed the destruction, with nearby buildings significantly damaged and over a dozen parked vehicles affected. Emergency services transported several injured victims to local hospitals, with around 20 in critical condition, as reported by doctors cited by AP.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, describing it as a “cowardly act of terrorism.” He vowed justice for those responsible, stating, “Such acts cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan.” He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and assured that the nation stands united with Balochistan in this difficult time.
INDIA VOWS TO HUNT TERRORISTS ‘TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH’ AS TENSIONS WITH PAKISTAN RISE AFTER KASHMIR ATTACK
Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti accused Indian-supported proxies of destabilizing Pakistan. India has denied these claims amid ongoing tensions over Kashmir. Bugti condemned the attack, stating terrorists target innocents and asserting, “There will be no safe haven left for terrorists in Balochistan.” He emphasized the commitment to pursue those responsible.
The BLA has escalated its operations, with suicide attacks against Pakistani forces becoming more frequent. In a previous incident in 2024, a suicide bomber targeted a train station in Balochistan, killing at least 26 people, including soldiers.
