A mother and her two children were swept away into the ocean in Laguna Beach on Tuesday evening, following powerful waves that created hazardous conditions. Authorities reported that one of the children remains missing.
Around 7:30 p.m., the city’s Marine Safety Department received a distress call about swimmers struggling in the water. Nearby individuals acted quickly to rescue the mother and one of the children, according to KABC. However, the search continues for the other child.
Efforts to locate the missing child are underway. A Sheriff’s helicopter and Laguna Beach lifeguards are actively searching the shoreline and turbulent waters near the Montage Resort, where the child was swept off the rocks.
This incident comes during a period when much of the Southern California coast is facing perilous conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for several areas, including Catalina, the Santa Barbara islands, Malibu Coast, and all Los Angeles County beaches. These hazardous beach conditions are expected to persist for the San Diego and Orange county coastlines through Thursday afternoon.
“There is an increased risk for ocean drowning,” the weather service warned. “Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.”
Authorities urge caution for all who venture near the coast. Strong rip currents and large waves present significant dangers to swimmers, surfers, and boaters alike.
