Venezuelan capital Caracas experienced two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday evening, which resulted in significant structural damage and widespread panic. The initial quake, recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), had a magnitude of 7.1. Its epicenter was situated west of Morón, a community located along the country’s Caribbean coast, approximately 168 kilometers (104 miles) west of Caracas. The quake had a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles).

Minutes following the first earthquake, a second, more intense quake occurred with a magnitude of 7.5. This larger quake’s epicenter was 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Morón, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued tsunami alerts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

In Caracas, residents evacuated swaying buildings and gathered outside in visible shock. Entire walls collapsed, leaving furniture exposed to view from the street. Dust clouds were reported in two neighborhoods where businesses usually thrive, amplifying the sense of alarm.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello reported the earthquake’s impact was felt across several states. Alarming situations were noted in Caracas’s Altamira neighborhood, with several homes and buildings collapsed.

Cabello advised residents to stay outdoors due to potential aftershocks, which might further threaten unstable structures. Injuries were reported, prompting Cabello to appeal for motorists to clear roads for ambulances and emergency services.

Cabello, addressing citizens on state television, highlighted the need to follow established protocols to optimize aid and rescue operations. He reminded people to prioritize the safety of children and the elderly, urging them to check on each other’s wellbeing.
