Tornadoes Ravage Merrillville and Surrounding Areas

5 days ago 0

Martin Dean walked through a parking lot, shining a flashlight through the jagged hole in his car window. Nearby, debris and structural remains from an apartment building lay scattered. Merrillville, in northwest Indiana, had just endured a tornado. Several areas outside of Chicago were hit by tornadoes on Thursday night during severe weather that swept through the Midwest over two days. Meteorologists spent Friday assessing the extent and strength of these tornadoes. According to Kevin Doom from the National Weather Service in Chicago, evidence suggested a tornado moved through Merrillville and adjacent areas like St. John and Hobart. Further details were expected later.

Other likely tornadoes struck places like Streator and Dwight in north-central Illinois, as well as southern Lake County in Indiana, Doom noted. After days of storms, clear skies are predicted for Friday, allowing residents to evaluate the aftermath. On Wednesday, more than a dozen tornadoes were reported across northern Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Illinois. These storms caused power outages affecting hundreds of thousands and disrupted over a thousand flights at Chicago airports. The severe weather resumed on Thursday, prompting alerts on flooding, thunderstorms, high winds, and tornadoes. Due to this, the White Sox canceled their game against the Braves, and a Mumford & Sons concert at Wrigley Field faced delays.

Dean, a 35-year-old from Chicago’s South Side, regularly visits Merrillville for work. With a storm alert on his phone, he prepared for its impact. At a friend’s apartment, debris “fly everywhere” caught his attention during his shower. At nearly 11 p.m., he witnessed the damage outside. “This is terrible — it’s going to take a couple days to clean this up,” said Dean, surveying the torn vehicles, disrupted power lines, and widespread debris.

Maria Williams stood outside her home, dressed in blue scrubs, facing the destruction. Her house was severely damaged, with its roof stripped down to the frame. ‘This was home for four of my five children,’ she said, overwhelmed with emotion. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, she was preparing for work when her daughter, Kari, warned her about the tornado impact. Kari described being thrown back by strong winds while watching Netflix with her brother. They sought shelter with neighbors overnight. Williams’ focus turned solely to her children, ignoring the drive back and her job responsibilities.

Upon arriving home, darkness and power outages obscured the full extent of the damage. The morning light revealed the devastating losses. She struggled to comprehend their new reality, expressing her despair, “I worked so hard for the little bit I do… and it’s just, it’s just gone.”
