Anne Wilson, a Grammy-nominated Christian-country singer, believes that following Jesus might come with sacrifices, and she is prepared to make them. In her book, “Rebel: Following Jesus When the World Walks the Other Way”, she discusses facing criticism, industry pressure, and the fear of rejection while remaining firm in her faith.
Coming from Kentucky, Wilson told Fox News Digital that being outspoken about her Christianity has at times cost her professional opportunities in Nashville, despite her success. “I’ve missed many opportunities because I speak about my faith,” said Wilson. She explains that she is bold about her beliefs and stands firm, despite being warned about potential consequences by her manager and team.
Her conviction is evident in her writings. When discussing contracts with a major country label, Wilson made it clear that her message about Jesus was non-negotiable. She describes performing at country festivals where she is looked at strangely for preaching Jesus, yet she remains committed to her calling of spreading the gospel.
Wilson’s song “My Jesus” is deeply personal, emerging from the tragic loss of her brother. This purpose of spreading the gospel is her main reason for pursuing music. Upon entering the industry, she was inspired by a label head’s encouragement to bring God back to country music. She felt accepted by both Christian and country music communities for being herself.
Wilson recounts times when fear of rejection clashed with support from the country music industry. Performing at Florida’s Tortuga Music Festival, she faced a near-empty tent which fueled her doubts about branching into country music. However, as her performance neared, the crowd gathered to hear her message.
She shared an experience where she resisted the temptation to make her message more palatable or to alter her image for broader acceptance. Instead, she stayed loyal to her beliefs, refusing to change her setlist or conform to industry pressures.
Anne Wilson’s resolve is strengthened by her journey. When performing at the Rock the South festival, she faced an audience that was not there for her message. Yet, she embraced her role, backed by the encouragement of Lainey Wilson to be authentically herself. The experience reinforced Anne’s commitment to sharing her faith.
Anne’s early career was spurred by a viral video of her singing at her brother’s funeral at just 15. That event caught the attention of a talent scout, leading to her successful music career.
Wilson admits that her outspoken faith has sometimes cost her professionally. Yet, she remains undeterred, realizing the world’s challenging dynamics. She encourages other artists and her generation to speak openly about their faith despite potential backlash.
Throughout her career, Wilson has felt pressure to change her appearance and message. Still, she chooses to be respected for her music and faith, rather than her appearance. Her commitment to this path is unwavering, stating she will stay true to herself regardless of the industry pressures.
