The Chicago White Sox have captured first place in the American League Central, a notable achievement for a team that suffered over 100 losses in each of the past three seasons. Davis Martin, a right-handed starter, shared his enthusiasm about the turnaround, stating how rewarding it feels to come to the park with the chance of winning. This shift offers a stark contrast to previous difficult seasons.
Martin expressed how the present atmosphere has made daily routines and long road trips worthwhile. The camaraderie and entertaining personalities within the team create an exciting environment for players.
“It’s super exciting to come to the yard every day,” Martin said.
The White Sox highlighted their newfound vigor with a 2-1 victory against the Atlanta Braves, the best team in Major League Baseball, witnessed by 14,627 spectators at Rate Field. Martin excelled with six shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out six, outmatching Chris Sale, the 2024 Cy Young Award winner and former White Sox player.
Martin took a moment to reflect on the scoreboard displaying their career stats, marveling at the high numbers players like Sale have achieved.
“You want to play against these guys. This is why you want to be in the big leagues,” Martin admitted.
The White Sox, now standing at 36-31, moved half a game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians. Key contributors included rookie Braden Montgomery, who hit two doubles, and Derek Hill and Luisangel Acuna, who drove in runs during the fourth inning. Montgomery made a splash with a walk-off home run in his major-league debut Tuesday night. In Wednesday’s game, Montgomery showcased versatility by doubling right-handed against Sale and left-handed against James Karinchak.
Montgomery discussed the careful balance between acknowledging Sale’s status in the game while staying focused in the game.
“You’ve got to find balance and put together quality at-bats,” he remarked.
White Sox right fielder Braden Montgomery was greeted with high-fives from Jacob Gonzalez and teammates after scoring in the fourth inning against the Braves on June 10, 2026, at Rate Field. Colson Montgomery, unable to play due to back tightness, plans to return soon. Despite discomfort surfacing weeks ago, he assures there is no serious concern but emphasizes proactive measures to avoid aggravation.
“We’re ahead of it,” Colson Montgomery assured. “It’s nothing to worry about.”
Colson Montgomery enjoyed watching Braden Montgomery’s major-league debut and home run despite his absence, discussing their good relationship and friendly banter as teammates.
The series also included notable interactions within the Acuna family. Braves outfielder Ronald Jr. and Sox infielder Luisangel shared the field against each other for the second time in their careers. During the game, Ronald attempted to steal second base but was tagged out by Luisangel amid playful banter. Ronald later suffered a hamstring injury, placing him on the 10-day injured list.
Luisangel reflected on facing his brother in the majors as a fulfillment of childhood dreams.
“I always dreamt of playing here with him,” Luisangel said through an interpreter.
Jeff Vorva, a freelance reporter for the Chicago Tribune, covered the game and player exchanges.
