Witness Accounts: Tragedy Unfolds
Bailey Reed, a witness to the fatal plane crash in Butler, Missouri, described the harrowing scene as the aircraft collided with the ground. Saying the plane was “completely perpendicular with the wings to the sky,” Reed watched as the catastrophic impact caused an explosion, setting the surrounding area ablaze.
Reed emphasized the impossibility for those onboard to deploy parachutes. “They were so low to the ground,” she reported, expressing that survival was not conceivable. Several family members present to support their loved ones witnessed the disaster unfold.
Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson conveyed sympathy, acknowledging the profound sense of loss. “Our hearts go out to them,” he said.
“There’s nothing we really can say to make it better.”
Ongoing NTSB Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has commenced an in-depth investigation into the crash. Robert Sumwalt, former chair of the NTSB, highlighted the importance of examining the mechanical state of the aircraft alongside the pilot’s training.
The absence of a communication tower at Butler Memorial Airport is a notable factor under consideration. “The FAA oversight, particularly for smaller, non-commercial operations like parachute endeavors, will be scrutinized,” Sumwalt stated.
Response from Skydive Kansas City
Skydive Kansas City, operators of the flight, expressed profound grief over the event. “This is a devastating loss for everyone connected to Skydive Kansas City and for the wider skydiving community,” their statement read.
Committed to cooperating with investigators, the management and staff are focused on supporting each other through the tragedy. “The entire team is in shock, and the community is close-knit,” the group affirmed.
