On Monday afternoon, Vozinha, the goalkeeper of Cape Verde, showed his mettle against Spain, a top-ranked team in global soccer. During the first half, in the 39th minute, Spain aimed a pass down the left side, leading to an open shot at the goal. Ferran Torres of Spain kicked the ball, hitting the crossbar, and causing a frantic scene. Mikel Oyarzabal attempted to head the rebound into the net, but Vozinha leapt up, heroically pushing the ball out of play.

Although the play was eventually halted due to an offside call against Spain, it demonstrated Vozinha’s determination. Vozinha recorded seven official saves, earning Cape Verde a 0-0 draw against Spain in its first-ever World Cup match. This impressive performance garnered significant attention.

Spain entered as the second top-ranked team worldwide. Its roster included stars like Lamine Yamal, known for playing with elite European clubs. Despite Spain’s formidable lineup, Vozinha and Cape Verde managed to hold their ground.

Before the match, Vozinha was not widely recognized. Born as Josimar José Évora Dias, he was given the nickname ‘Vozinha’ by his grandparents. His career includes playing for clubs in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal. Despite not playing for high-profile teams like Real Madrid, his performance on Monday was exceptional.

Throughout the match, Spain dominated several aspects statistically. They had a higher number of total shots (27-6), shots on goal (7-1), and corner kicks (11-1), along with a significant advantage in ball possession (74% to 26%). Despite these numbers, Cape Verde’s defenders stayed compact, and Vozinha maintained composure.

Even with a talented player like Larine Lamal joining in the second half, Spain was unable to break through. After Cape Verde’s historic draw, fans celebrated outside the stadium, waving the national flag and holding up scarves reading “Cabo Verde.” The team’s name resounded globally following this triumphant performance.
