The Harvey Fire Department is investigating a series of fires that destroyed several abandoned homes on Turlington Road on June 2 as potential arson.
In a statement, the department revealed that evidence suggests the fires may have been deliberately ignited. However, further forensic analysis and investigative efforts are required to confirm these initial findings.
The fires began at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the 15400 block of Turlington Road and were contained by 4 a.m. that day.
Fire Chief Howard Fisher emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We take these incidents very seriously and are committed to identifying those responsible. The safety of our residents, businesses, and firefighters remains our highest priority.”
During the aftermath and cleanup, electricians discovered a kitten in the debris on the 5400 block of Turlington Road.
According to the department, the fires spread from two structures that were completely engulfed in flames to nearby abandoned buildings. This occurred due to extreme radiant heat and hazards from active power lines. As a safety measure, ComEd temporarily cut the power in the affected area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Harvey has faced financial difficulties, leading to the furlough of about 40% of city workers in October. Nearly half of the Fire Department staff were affected. Over the last seven months, Harvey has relied on fire mutual aid from neighboring communities to compensate for staffing shortages.
Anyone with information about the fires is urged to contact 708-331-7720.
