Tornado Devastates Hickory Hills and Bridgeview, Residents Recall the Destruction

3 hours ago 0

Residents in Hickory Hills and Bridgeview faced severe damage after a tornado tore through their area. On Friday, people gathered outside their damaged apartment buildings, observing the aftermath. A roof was torn off completely, and a garage was impaled by a piece of wood. Nearby, a highway sign was split in half.

“Everyone was concurring, like, this looks like a tornado,” said Melissa Alvarez, an apartment resident.

The National Weather Service confirmed on Monday that the destruction was indeed caused by a tornado with wind speeds between 111 and 135 mph. The tornado traveled from Hickory Hills to the Midway Airport area and was one of 17 tornadoes that struck the region on Thursday night.

Alvarez mentioned that power was restored in her building Sunday night, allowing her to return home. However, she remained uncertain if a safety inspection had been conducted since the roof was blown off.

Impact on Local Infrastructure

Hickory Hills Mayor Mike Howley noted he was attending a City Council meeting when the storm hit. He realized the significant structural damage only the next day, upon receiving photos of knocked-down poles and live wires.

“You could actually feel like the windows being sucked in,” Howley said.

The storm caused widespread power outages and disrupted water services, with a water main break reported. It also knocked down around four wooden utility poles in the area near 88th and 89th streets.

Howley stated that, to his knowledge, the storm did not result in any fatalities or injuries. He expressed his surprise at the level of devastation, considering his over 50-year residency in the town.

Efforts to restore the town continued, with about 12% still without power as of Monday afternoon. The Police and Public Works departments were actively involved in clearing debris, and Howley regularly communicated updates to residents via email.

He warned against scammers who might attempt to charge residents for tree services following such disasters.

Tornado Assessment and Regional Impact

The National Weather Service stated that its June 11 tornado ratings were preliminary, and further analysis would be conducted regarding the storm’s path.

Simultaneously, Calumet City experienced heavy storms Sunday, which caused significant damage. Trees, some over 100 years old, were uprooted and fell on homes and vehicles.

Mayor Thaddeus Jones remarked that he hadn’t seen a storm impact residential areas so severely before. The storm knocked out power widely and caused a gas line issue when a tree fell on a woman’s house. Although she was hospitalized, she was released on Tuesday, and her home is slated for demolition.

The storms ravaged Calumet City’s 7th Ward significantly. City officials collaborated with the Red Cross to provide housing support and organized a response crew of 56 personnel from Police and Fire departments. Crews worked continuously in shifts, conducting wellness checks and responding to numerous resident calls for assistance.

Residents were cautioned by the Emergency Services Department to remain vigilant around downed trees, utility lines, and work zones.
