As tensions between the United States and Cuba escalate, a critical online platform used by many Cubans in the US to send goods and money to their families in Cuba is closing operations. Envioscuba.com has halted its services amidst increased US sanctions targeting Cuba’s economy.
The Trump administration has intensified efforts to pressure the Cuban government, impacting several major entities, including the state-run oil and gas company, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, and GAESA, a military-run business conglomerate. GAESA controls diverse businesses such as car rentals, retail stores, and transportation companies across the island.
Cubans are currently facing severe food and medicine shortages, ongoing blackouts, and sweltering weather. Many rely on aid from family and friends in the US, who send money and goods or purchase items online for delivery in Cuba.
Envioscuba.com announced it will no longer accept new orders, although existing orders will still be fulfilled. The platform cited reasons beyond its control for the cessation but did not provide detailed information. The lack of contact information on their website, such as a phone number or email, has made it difficult to gather more details about the shutdown.
Emilio Morales, president of the Havana Consulting Group, explained that platforms like envioscuba.com typically operate in collaboration with Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. Instead of shipping products from the US to Cuba, these platforms deliver items stored within GAESA’s island-based warehouses. Morales anticipates similar platforms will shut down to avoid potential sanctions from the US government.
The sanctions pose a massive risk for foreign companies, threatening to freeze US assets and restrict travel for those involved, significantly hampering their operations within the US financial system. The Spanish hotel chain Meliá has recently decided to cease operations at 15 of its 34 Cuban hotels, joining other companies scaling back their Cuban activities.
