A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee in Yuba City, California, Jacob Smith, suffered severe burns after a coworker allegedly threw hot oil on him. The incident took place on May 30 as Smith was preparing to leave from work.
According to Amber Smith, Jacob’s mother, he was in the office counting money when the attack occurred. He noticed motion in the corner of his eye and then felt the oil splashed on him. The injuries cover his face, neck, right arm, and back, causing significant pain.
The police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett. After the attack, Bluett reportedly fled the scene but was arrested by Sutter County deputies on May 31. He had been declared missing before his arrest.
Bluett faces several felony charges including battery with serious bodily injury, mayhem, and assault with a deadly weapon. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges. His public defender declined to comment.
John Cook, who owns and operates the Yuba City McDonald’s, confirmed that Bluett is no longer employed at the restaurant. Cook expressed concern over the incident, stating, “The serious incident that took place at our restaurant is deeply concerning, and our focus is on supporting our employee, Jacob, as he recovers.” He assured that the safety and well-being of employees, guests, and the community remain the top priority.
Jacob Smith is being treated in the UC Davis ICU burn unit. His mother reported that doctors are trying to manage his “excruciating” pain and are attempting to reduce the severity of the burns to limit the necessity for extensive skin grafting.
